In medieval Scotland, the dirk was a backup to the broadsword, and was wielded by the left hand while the scabbard was carried on the arm. Dirks were used to swear an oath upon in Celtic cultures.
To this day, a real or false dirk is sometimes worn as a part of traditional
Scottish costume. |

Since the traditional kilt does not have pockets, the sporran serves as a wallet and container for any other necessary personal items (such as a hip-flask). It is essentially a survival of the common European medieval belt-pouch, superseded elsewhere as clothing came to have pockets, but continuing in the Scottish Highlands because of the lack of these accessories in traditional dress.
Dress, Semi Dress and casual sporrans are all made here in Canada from the
finest of materials. |

Legend has it that during a visit by Queen Victoria, kilt wearers were subjected to strong winds that revealed to the Queen what was worn underneath. Some say that this created the demand for kilt pins which are used to hold the garment in place.
Kincardine’s Scottish Shop has many pins to choose from. Quite effective in any weather.
